Custom Made Knives UK – Why a Handmade Knife from Skol Knives is Worth It
If you’ve ever held a truly well-made knife, you’ll know the difference straight away.
It’s not just about sharpness — it’s about balance, feel, purpose, and the story behind it.
At Skol Knives, I don’t make knives in bulk. I make knives for people.
What Is a Custom Made Knife?
A custom made knife is built specifically for you — not pulled from a shelf, not mass-produced, and not rushed through a factory.
Every detail is considered:
Blade length and thickness
Steel choice (carbon or stainless)
Grind style (scandi, flat, sabre)
Handle shape and materials
Guard, spacers, and finish
Whether it’s a Bowie knife, bushcraft blade, or something completely unique, the goal is simple — create a knife that works exactly how you need it to.
Why Choose a Handmade Knife Over Factory Made?
Mass-produced knives have their place, but they’re built to suit everyone… which often means they don’t truly suit anyone.
A handmade knife from a UK maker gives you:
1. Performance Built Around You
Your knife should feel right in your hand — not just “good enough.”
2. Quality Materials
At Skol Knives, I work with trusted steels like 1084, 80CrV2, AEB-L and Damascus, paired with natural handle materials such as curly birch, walnut, yew, and bog oak.
3. Built to Last a Lifetime
These aren’t disposable tools. They’re knives you can rely on — and pass down.
4. True Craftsmanship
Every grind line, every handle contour, every finish is done by hand in my UK workshop.
The Skol Knives Design Process
A lot of people think they need a perfect design before getting in touch — you don’t.
Most custom builds start with a simple idea:
“I want something like a Bowie…”
“I need a solid bushcraft knife…”
“I’ve got this sketch…”
From there, I work with you to refine the design.
Step 1 – Concept
We talk through how the knife will be used and what you like.
Step 2 – Design
I’ll sketch up your knife — just like this Bowie design below — and adjust it until it’s right.
Step 3 – Build
Your knife is made by hand, with attention to every detail.
Step 4 – Finish
Sharpened, finished, and ready for real use — not just display.
A Recent Example – Custom Bowie Knife
One recent design featured:
14.5” blade
Sabre grind
Brass guard
American walnut handle
A proper statement piece — built to be used, not just admired.
That’s the difference with custom work… it reflects the person it’s made for.
Who Are Custom Knives For?
You don’t need to be a collector to own a custom knife.
They’re ideal for:
Bushcraft and camping enthusiasts
Hunters and outdoorsmen
Chefs wanting something unique
Collectors looking for one-off pieces
Anyone who values quality over quantity
Why Choose Skol Knives?

The Traditional and Original Bushcraft Knife "Nessmuk"

Skol Knives Drop Point HunterThe Drop Point Hunter – Hand Forged British CraftsmanshipThe Drop Point Hunter is a knife born from traditional methods, honest materials, and a shared respect for craftsmanship. Designed as a practical, no-nonsense hunting and outdoor knife, it balances rugged performance with refined, understated aesthetics.Forged in Britain, Finished by HandThe blade of this knife was hand forged in the UK by Dr Zech from British 1084 carbon steel, a steel long favoured by bladesmiths for its excellent edge stability, toughness, and ease of maintenance in the field. Forging gives the blade its distinctive character—no two are ever quite the same—and preserves the organic flow of the steel.Once forged, the blade was ground, finished, and sharpened by me at Skol Knives, where careful attention is given to geometry, balance, and cutting performance. The result is a purposeful drop point profile with a strong spine, controllable tip, and a cutting edge suited to skinning, food prep, and general camp tasks. Why a Drop Point? The drop point design is a classic choice for hunters and bushcrafters alike. Its gently sloping spine places the tip lower, giving excellent control and reducing the risk of accidental punctures when working close to hand. This makes it equally capable whether you’re processing game, carving feather sticks, or preparing food at camp.Natural Sumac Wood HandleThe handle is crafted from sumac wood, chosen for its subtle grain, warm tones, and comfortable feel in the hand. Finished to enhance the natural character of the wood, it offers a secure grip while ageing beautifully over time. As with all natural handle materials, each piece of sumac has its own unique pattern, ensuring every knife is truly one of a kind.Built to Be UsedThis is not a shelf-only knife. The Drop Point Hunter is designed to be used, carried, and trusted—a tool that will develop character through years of honest work. The carbon steel blade will naturally patina with use, telling the story of where it’s been and what it’s done.Key SpecificationsBlade steel: British 1084 carbon steelBlade style: Drop pointManufacture: Hand forged in the UK, hand finished by Skol KnivesHandle: Natural sumac woodIntended use: Hunting, bushcraft, and general outdoor tasksIf you’re looking for a traditional British-made hunting knife with real heritage, practical performance, and natural materials, the Drop Point Hunter is exactly that—a modern working knife rooted in timeless craft.
