Elmax hight end stainless steel, one of the best knife steels in the world

Why Elmax Steel Is One of the Best Knife Steels in the World
When it comes to high-performance knife steels, Elmax consistently sits at the top of the list — and for good reason. Used by premium custom makers and respected worldwide, Elmax combines edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness in a way very few steels can.
At Skol Knives, we choose our steels carefully. Every material we use has to earn its place through real-world performance, not marketing hype. Elmax does exactly that.
What Is Elmax Steel?
Elmax is a powder metallurgy stainless steel produced by Uddeholm, a world-renowned Swedish steel manufacturer.
Unlike traditional steels that are cast from molten metal, powder metallurgy (PM) steels are made by:
Atomising molten steel into microscopic powder
Compressing it under extreme pressure and heat
This process creates an exceptionally fine and uniform grain structure, which is the secret behind Elmax’s outstanding performance.
High Carbon, Done Properly
Elmax contains approximately 1.7% carbon, which is very high for a stainless steel. Normally, this level of carbon would make a blade brittle — but powder metallurgy changes the game.
Thanks to the PM process:
Carbides remain small and evenly distributed
The steel stays tough and stable
The edge can be pushed harder without chipping
This allows Elmax blades to be heat treated to 60–62 HRC (or higher for kitchen knives) while remaining dependable in real use.
Exceptional Edge Retention
One of the main reasons customers love Elmax is how long it stays sharp.
Elmax contains vanadium carbides, which are extremely hard and wear-resistant. Combined with its fine microstructure, this means:
Excellent edge life
Clean slicing performance
Less frequent sharpening
Whether you’re carving, food prepping, or using a knife day after day in the field, Elmax holds its edge far longer than most traditional steels.
True Stainless Performance
With around 18% chromium, Elmax is a true stainless steel, not “semi-stainless” like some popular tool steels.
That makes it ideal for:
Damp UK weather
Bushcraft and camping
Kitchen use
Everyday carry
Elmax resists rust, staining, and corrosion far better than carbon steels such as O1 or 1095 — perfect for users who want performance without constant maintenance.
Surprisingly Tough
Despite its hardness and wear resistance, Elmax is tougher than many people expect.
Compared to steels like D2, Elmax offers:
Better resistance to chipping
Improved lateral strength
Greater confidence in real-world use
This balance makes it suitable for bushcraft knives, outdoor knives, skinners, and high-end kitchen knives alike.

Skol Knives Drop Point HunterThe Drop Point Hunter – Hand Forged British CraftsmanshipThe Drop Point Hunter is a knife born from traditional methods, honest materials, and a shared respect for craftsmanship. Designed as a practical, no-nonsense hunting and outdoor knife, it balances rugged performance with refined, understated aesthetics.Forged in Britain, Finished by HandThe blade of this knife was hand forged in the UK by Dr Zech from British 1084 carbon steel, a steel long favoured by bladesmiths for its excellent edge stability, toughness, and ease of maintenance in the field. Forging gives the blade its distinctive character—no two are ever quite the same—and preserves the organic flow of the steel.Once forged, the blade was ground, finished, and sharpened by me at Skol Knives, where careful attention is given to geometry, balance, and cutting performance. The result is a purposeful drop point profile with a strong spine, controllable tip, and a cutting edge suited to skinning, food prep, and general camp tasks. Why a Drop Point? The drop point design is a classic choice for hunters and bushcrafters alike. Its gently sloping spine places the tip lower, giving excellent control and reducing the risk of accidental punctures when working close to hand. This makes it equally capable whether you’re processing game, carving feather sticks, or preparing food at camp.Natural Sumac Wood HandleThe handle is crafted from sumac wood, chosen for its subtle grain, warm tones, and comfortable feel in the hand. Finished to enhance the natural character of the wood, it offers a secure grip while ageing beautifully over time. As with all natural handle materials, each piece of sumac has its own unique pattern, ensuring every knife is truly one of a kind.Built to Be UsedThis is not a shelf-only knife. The Drop Point Hunter is designed to be used, carried, and trusted—a tool that will develop character through years of honest work. The carbon steel blade will naturally patina with use, telling the story of where it’s been and what it’s done.Key SpecificationsBlade steel: British 1084 carbon steelBlade style: Drop pointManufacture: Hand forged in the UK, hand finished by Skol KnivesHandle: Natural sumac woodIntended use: Hunting, bushcraft, and general outdoor tasksIf you’re looking for a traditional British-made hunting knife with real heritage, practical performance, and natural materials, the Drop Point Hunter is exactly that—a modern working knife rooted in timeless craft.
