Skol Knives Traditional Scandinavian Puukko with Stacked Birch Bark Handle

Skol Knives Handcrafted Puukko Knife – 80CrV2 Steel With Birch Bark & Copper

Today I’m taking a closer look at a truly standout piece from the workshop — this handmade Puukko knife built with an 80CrV2 carbon steel blade and a stacked birch bark handle, finished beautifully with a copper bolster and copper pommel. It’s a knife that blends rugged outdoor function with traditional Nordic aesthetics, and the result is something that looks as good as it performs.

A Puukko Built for the Outdoors

The Puukko has been a trusted tool across the Nordic regions for centuries, and this build stays true to that heritage. In the hand, it feels compact, balanced, and incredibly capable — ideal for bushcraft, carving, camp craft, and all-round outdoor use.

The 80CrV2 blade has a clean, purposeful grind designed for controlled slicing and detailed woodworking. It’s tough enough for harder tasks but fine enough for feathersticks, notching, and food prep around camp.

Why 80CrV2 Steel?

This steel is a favourite for modern working Puukkos for good reason:

  • High toughness for real outdoor use
  • Strong edge stability for carving
  • Easy to sharpen in the field
  • Great edge retention even with regular use

It’s a steel made to be used, not just admired.

Birch Bark Handle – Traditional & Practical

The stacked birch bark handle really stands out in this build. It offers:

  • A warm, natural feel in the hand
  • Excellent grip, even when wet
  • Shock absorption for carving tasks
  • A lightweight, comfortable profile

Birch bark develops character with use, making it a material that truly belongs on a working knife.

Copper Bolster & Pommel – Rugged Elegance

The copper bolster and pommel add a beautiful contrast to the dark birch bark layers. Over time, that copper will develop its own patina, giving the knife even more character and individuality. It’s a blend of tradition and craftsmanship that gives the knife a premium finish without sacrificing durability.

A Knife Made to Last

Whether it’s heading out on a long weekend in the woods, joining your bushcraft kit, or serving as a dependable everyday tool, this Puukko is built to work hard. It’s a perfect example of what a custom handmade bushcraft knife should be — simple, reliable, comfortable, and crafted with purpose.
